Thank you GCVAA, for the privilege and honor of being your judge for your 2020 exhibition. Congratulations to all the artists who have a piece in the exhibit! To the artists who were not selected for this year's exhibit enter again and again. We need *your* unique vision and voice also. No one else can do it but you! And as I once advised, "Until you can wallpaper a wall in rejection slips, you have not entered enough exhibitions."
The exhibiting artists in this year's show have pushed boundaries, explored new avenues of expression, honed skills in a variety of media, visually communicated concepts and shown us another view of our world. This is contemporary art at its best.
Then there was the judging awards...digitally! Oh how I wish I was there to enjoy each work in person, complete the important task of assigning awards, meet the artists personally and answer questions. Covid-19 had other plans. Therefore, I will make comments here, so you can better understand my aesthetic reasoning.
As diligently as any judge might try to be objective about their job, by nature, judging art is an unavoidably subjective task. But there is an important set of objective criteria I certainly look for: good composition, uniqueness of vision, skillful handling of the medium and personal expression. If you have all four, you have a great painting!
Congratulations to the award winners!
Special Thanks to the GIBSON COUNTY UTILITY DISTRICT
