The Gibson County Visual Arts Association is proud to offer a TOM LYNCH-- "WATERCOLOR SECRETS REVEALED" 5 DAY WORKSHOP, May 4 -8, 2015 in nearby Trenton / Milan, Tennessee.  LYNCH will also be our juror for the GCVAA 2015 National Exhibition.
Here is a preview:

TOM LYNCH  HAS BEEN SELECTED BY AMERICAN ARTIST MAGAZINE AS ONE OF THE
"TOP 20" TEACHERS IN THE NATION!

DON'T MISS THIS GREAT OPPORTUNITY TO STUDY WITH A MASTER TEACHER WITH 30 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE  * AUTHOR OF 7 BOOKS AND 5 TV SERIES

WHAT PAST STUDENTS HAVE SAID..."NEVER A DULL MOMENT"..."PATIENT-POSITIVE-FUN"..."GREAT DEMOS AND CRITIQUES"..."VERY ORGANIZED AND HELPFUL"...
"WONDERFUL VISUAL AIDS"..."MOST I EVER LEARNED IN ONE DAY"

Tom's objective is to show the vast range and flexibility of watercolor.  You will learn new techniques; how to plan for success; build a successful painting; and to put drama, emotion, and conviction into your art.  This award winning artist will show you how to push the limits of color, contrast
, and light.  Tom likes to put fun into the process of painting.  He has an organized program, with lots of visuals, that sets a goal for each day and sees that each student has an example and understanding of that day's lesson.  You will see daily demonstrations with detailed explanations of all the how's and why's, followed by plenty of individual attention, and a positive critique session.
GET READY FOR THE WATERCOLOR WORLD OF TOM LYNCH!

No doubt this WILL be the one of the best workshops GCVAA has been able to bring to our artists through a matching grant from the Tennessee Arts Commission.  Today I received a beautiful Tom Lynch  print that will be presented as a door prize at the workshop. I also received a great publicity packet including cards and posters.
IMPRESSIVE!  As our class has room for ONLY TWO more lucky participants I know I am looking forward to this workshop, MAY 4-8, 2015!

Follow-Up  Painting Memorable Watercolor Watercolor with Tuva Stephens

It was an honor to teach the workshop for several local GCVAA Members, October 26 and November 2, 2013.  Amazingly within two days the five participants presented work in which I was impressed!  Time was spent outside class by the participants learning how "to allow the watercolor" pigments to mingle and mix on the paper to produce beautiful hues.  Participants felt comfortable sharing what they had learned and what they needed to do to move on with watercolors.  Because it was a small class, they received lots of individual attention!

Andrew Wyeth once said, "Watercolor is a spoiled brat."  Edgar Whitney said, "Watercolor obeys its own laws."   The first step in understanding watercolor knows how the watercolor will react to the amount of moisture on the paper and in the brush.  That is when you truly start understanding the watercolor medium and have the, "AH! HA" moment!  I loved the questions and the remarks from the participants.  All agreed it was time well spent.  Everyone especially enjoyed the atmosphere in the elegant Teapot Museum. Visitors not only took pictures of the teapots but the workshop activities.
All agreed it was time well spent and the time flew by!

A Special Person - Our GCVAA President

10/30/2013

Words can't express what a great President we have in Royce Harris.  She seems relentless to keep our members active.  Whether it is accomplishing a goal of getting 30 + (4'x4') painted Quilt Squares Boards sponsored and installed all over the Gibson County countryside or encouraging photography exhibitions, members exhibitions and workshops; she is always there to get it done!  Royce always does a wonderful job as our National Exhibition Chairperson as well.

Royce does beautiful photography  and knows art because she taught art for many years.  She especially loves to travel.  So on behalf of our membership I say "thank you,"  and we do appreciate all that you do.

By the way I would be remiss if I did not mention our dedicated mentor, Berlynne Holman and Bobbie Jean Parnell who were two of our Founding Members and continues to guide us. You continue to keep us focused on the mission of GCVAA.  It was Berlynne who wrote our Tennessee Arts Commission Grants for many years.  I was honored when Berlynne tagged me to take over the grant writing and she continues to advise me.  Bobbie Jean served as Treasurer from 1997 until just recently.  Nell Lemings stepped up to be our new Treasurer.  Regina Crawley, an art educator, does a flawless job as our Secretary.  We welcome new members above, Leigh Butler and Janet Foster to our group.

It is hoped that Royce will enjoy posting some blogs here for our members to comment on.  Any members who would like to submit a blog.  You may send Royce or me and we will post here.
This website if for our membership and others to check out.

So what do you think of our new website!  If you have any suggestions let me know.  I am not sure what to do with the blue buttons.

    Tuva Stephens
Retired Art and Drama Instructor / Professional Artist

I truly believe GCVAA is one of the most amazing art organizations in Tennessee.  My life changed when I became a part of GCVAA about 14 years ago.  I have learned so much from all their wonderful workshops featuring the best in watercolor.  GCVAA has served me well in my second career as a professional artist.
